Samsung successfully collaborated with AMD to demonstrate the industry’s first end-to-end call with AMD’s processors.
This was completed by leveraging Samsung’s vRAN software, integrated with AMD EPYC™ processors on Supermicro’s servers, supported by Wind River Studio Cloud Platform.
This first call is a significant milestone in Samsung’s vRAN journey as AMD’s processors enable 100% pure software vRAN.
The collaboration among the four companies is expected to provide operators with optimized performance and maximized energy efficiencies in their commercial networks.
Samsung will continue to advance vRAN innovations by building a strong ecosystem through diverse partnerships.
Which country’s Development Center of Samsung has developed the 100% pure software vRAN?
And what is meant by 100% pure software vRAN?
Does it mean, for ex,for computationally intensive BB functions ,like LDPC decoder, whether pure firmware, e.g. assembly language optimized function is used instead of scheduling it on say, FPGA based hw implementation?
What s the latency / call quality and so on difference between this call and mixed hw sw based traditional designs?
It would be good to get such details (I have yet to check the video).
Conducted in Samsung’s R&D lab in Korea, the first call was completed using Samsung’s versatile, O-RAN-compliant, virtualized RAN (vRAN) software, powered by AMD EPYC™ 8004 Series processors on Supermicro’s Telco/Edge servers, supported by Wind River Studio Container-as-a-Service (CaaS) platform.
This is 1st call for Samsung to achieve in vRAN oRAN implementation.
This is not industry 1st call however.
I remember in 2020, Mavenir and Turkcell also claimed the same.
May be they were also not the 1st ones in industry.
