Mapping of SINR to MCS

In 5G NR (New Radio), the Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) is a crucial metric used to determine the Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) for link adaptation. Higher SINR allows for higher MCS values, which in turn enables higher data rates.

Follows a table presenting a typical mapping of SINR to MCS values based on 5G NR SA drive test measurements for mMIMO 64T64R in C-band 3.5 GHz Ericsson equipment.

Following the table values, the 256QAM starts from lower values than the 3GPP typical recommendations. This mismapping is mostly due to specific Optional features activated as well as the vendor specific MCS selection under effective SINR thresholds., capturing then the vendor equipment performance and the operator configuration

A useful tool for planning and optimization engineers.

Hope to enjoy!!!
