MIMO and Multi-Port Antennas

MIMO and multi-port antennas are Enchanting wireless communication. Here’s a quick look at how these technologies are boosting performance!

  • 12-Port Antenna Setup (4x4 MIMO):

    • To support 4x4, at least 4 ports are required per band.
    • The distribution typically goes like this:
    • 4 Ports for 900 MHz band
    • 4 Ports for 1800 MHz band
    • 4 Ports for 2100 MHz band
  • Transmission Modes:

    • TM1: Simple single antenna,
    • No MIMO here.
    • TM2: Diversity MIMO,
    • Sends the same data twice for better Quality.
    • TM3: Open-loop MIMO,
    • Uses Rank Indicators (RI) for MIMO mode.
    • TM4: Closed-loop MIMO,
    • Combines RI and PMI feedback for higher throughput.
  • Channel Parameters: user feedback

    • RI (Rank Indicator): Shows how many data streams the channel can handle.
    • PMI : fine-tune transmissions for better throughput.

Summary:
RI and PMI are sent from the user, with TM depending on SINR and user speed (calculated by number of handovers). TM4 may struggle on fast roads, while PMI helps enhance throughput for better performance.
