There are many Telecom Open API Players. Why not consolidate them?

Hello Experts.

There are many Telecom Open API Players. Why not consolidate them?

  1. SoftBank Group Corp. was the latest to join the GSMA Open Gateway initiative, expanding membership to 35, aiming to accelerate industry cooperation and strengthen 5G innovation through common APIs

  2. Ericsson achieved the ‘Ready for ODA’ status by TM Forum. CityFibre, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telia, Telstra are the latest communication service providers (CSPs) to achieve ‘Running on ODA’ status. Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, Microsoft have built new cloud-ready ODA canvases and showcasing them with Oracle and China Mobile Hong Kong at DTW23 - Ignite

  3. Deutsche Telekom has launched the first CAMARA defined network APIs commercially in the German market in a close partnership with Ericsson & Vonage

Argument:

  1. CAMARA should be compatible with or should absorb TM Forum’s APIs into its larger set. TM Forum’s APIs are widely adopted by telcos & it would be counterproductive to reinvent the wheel.

  2. There are a number of benefits to having CAMARA & TM Forum’s APIs be compatible.

  • Reduced development costs: Developers would not need to spend time and resources developing separate applications for CAMARA and TM Forum’s APIs.

  • Increased interoperability: Applications developed for one platform would be able to work with the other platform, making it easier for telcos and companies to adopt both platforms.

  • Faster innovation: Developers would be able to focus on developing new and innovative applications, rather than having to worry about compatibility issues.

  1. Developing a common API layer would be the best approach. This would provide the greatest degree of compatibility & interoperability.

  2. What about GSMA Open Gateway? …is a set of common network APIs designed to provide universal access to operator networks for developers. CAMARA is an open source project within Linux Foundation to define, develop & publish the APIs. Can both consolidated too?

My thoughts, MNOs should only access one common API platform. Having a single common API platform would also benefit developers. Developers would only need to develop for a single platform, which would make it easier and faster for them to create new applications & services for MNOs.

There are some challenges that would need to be addressed in order to create a single common API platform for MNOs. One challenge is that there are a number of different telecom Open API initiatives underway. It is important to bring these initiatives together & create a single unified platform. Another challenge is that MNOs have different needs when it comes to Open APIs.

Conclusion, By consolidating the different telecom Open API initiatives and developing a single unified platform, we can make it easier for MNOs to adopt and use Open APIs. This will lead to the development of new & innovative services for customers, and it will help to reduce costs & improve efficiency for MNOs.

What are your thoughts?
