- WDM network consists of 4 parts
- access
- aggregation
- metro
- backbone
-
Access part where the customer devices connected to the network
-
Aggregation part where the customers traffic combined and aggregated to be transported to the core network together
-
Metro is the MAN part ( metropolitan area network ) and it’s a big area whether the link between the access / aggregation to the long distances backbone network
-
Backbone is the core network part where we have high capacity and large number of connections
-
Types of topologies :
- linear
- star
- mesh
- Ring ( tangent Ring , intersected Ring )
-
For access, most common network topology used is star and linear
-
For aggregation we can use Star topology for combining the leafs ( traffic from customers to one node )
-
For metro we can use ring topology
-
For backbone , we can use mesh network because of ease traffic protection and restoration
-
Choosing network topology in the design phase is not fixed and has no rule , it depends on number of connections , customer devices locations , protection mechanisms needed , distances between sites and other factors , usually use mixed network topology
-
From [product perspective for example we have Nokia PSS 1830 8 / 16 in access and Nokia PSS 16 , 32 in metro and we have Nokia PSS 1830 24x , 36 , 64 in Core network
