Hi @sadrnp.
Many areas of Telecom can be done remotely, including:
These are just a few examples of roles that can be done remotely. The exact roles and responsibilities that can be done remotely will depend on the specific company and the technology they use.
As per the specifica areas you listed:
Planning: can be done entirely in an office, and this office can be remote. But for the Desgin, it is recommended that the professional go to the field, do a Site Survey (like a tutorial that exists here in the Forum).
Optimization: largely can be done remotely, for example using Boda for analysis of Configuration Parameters, generating Baselines and Audits. Also, most activites of a telecom optimization engineer can be done remotely, like Network Performance Analysis (identify areas of improvement), Capacity Planning (strategies to increase the capacity), Traffic Engineering (optimize the routing and management of data and voice traffic), Quality of Service (QoS) Monitoring (quality metrics such as latency, jitter, and packet loss), Troubleshooting (diagnose and resolve network issues), Network Optimization (Network upgrades and optimization techniques like load balancing, traffic prioritization, and congestion control algorithms), Technical Documentation (maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of network configurations and topologies), Vendor Management (interact with equipment vendors).
But there are "complementary " activities to Optimization that need to be done in the field, visiting Customers to solve Complaints, and Drive Test collection.
In the case of Drive Test there is a strong tendency to “minimize it” (MDT - Minimization of Drive Test) through the use of Logs (traces) and Counters, but there are specific places where it will always be necessary. In addition, some laws (regulations) of some countries that make MDT difficult because they have strong laws against violation of users’ privacy (collection of user data).
Data Analysis basically involve the collection, processing, and interpretation of data generated by network. So, it can perfectly be done remotely.
Data Collection (data from various sources), Data Cleaning (to ensure its quality and accuracy), Data Transformation (into a format that can be easily analyzed), Data Exploration (to identify patterns, relationships, and trends), Data Modeling (describe the relationships between variables and to make predictions), Data Visualization (to facilitate data exploration and analysis), Data Interpretation (of the results of data analysis) and Data Communication (of the results of data analysis).
In general, data analysis play a critical role in the process of transforming data into actionable insights that inform decision-making and drive business outcomes, that is the reason a lot of people are looking to become DevOps.
And so on… For this, i would highlight ativities that may require physical presence on site.
These cases are for example Site Surveys (Physical site surveys to assess the suitability of a location for telecom infrastructure and to gather data on environmental conditions, such as topography and signal strength), Equipment Installation (Physical installation of equipment, such as base stations, microwave links, and fiber optic cables etc.), Equipment Maintenance (Physical maintenance of equipment, such as cleaning and replacement of components), Tower Climbing (Physical climbing of towers, masts, and antennas to perform maintenance or installation tasks), Physical Cable Management (Physical management of cables, including installation, testing, and maintenance).
Althought there will always be some activities that require physical presence on site, in general remote work is becoming more common in the telecom industry, with resources like email, video conferencing and instant messaging.
Of course these activities will depend on the size and complexity of the network you will be working, as well as the specific needs of the company - whether they require you to be present or not.
Mostly planning now a days
HI @RFGirl
Very good explanation about your points. Thank you!
I will share a little of my experience working remotely on telecom market. I do work on test and measurement market, but telecom tests, mostly for UE manufacturer and I work mostly remote, supporting customer to run Lab tests in, CAT (Carrier Approval tests) and carriers from different countries, GCF/PTRCB conformance tests, customer R&D and market issues, I mean, issues that happen in field and we recreate it on lab with wireless network simulator for identify if the issue is on the UE or the network side.
My point is, I can support them with technical support and do some R&D as well, for tests in Lab in general and we can do it totally remote. As we need someone to connect UE cables and to set UE FW, at the beginning of the work, someone needs to be physically on the lab just for one time and then you can run everything remotely. So occasionally I go to the customer lab but mostly for fortified the close relationship.
Because we can control remotely the PC which is running the tests and the network simulator as well by remote desktop or any other tool.
We are able to create testcases, meet with customer engineers, create and support test automation on customer lab everything remotely and it is working fine for several years, even before the pandemic isolation.
So, I think mostly of the tasks in test and measurement wireless telecom market we can work at least hibrid (remote and physically present) but the phisycal presence is more for relationship then to do the task itself.
I hope I can help the forum with my experience.
Thanks, and regards,
